David Speck – 2/29/1980 – 11/23/1996
Beloved Brother, My biggest fan!
This website is dedicated and in honor of my brother, Randall David Speck.
Randall passed away on November 23, 1996 of cancer at St. Jude Hospital
in
Memphis, TN. He was 16 and just beginning his life! We never know why
things happen in our lives and we often wonder WHY??? My brother was your
typical teenager that absolutely LOVED life! He was an outdoors person
who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching NASCAR!! A good ole’
country boy at that! I am quite sure that he and the “famous”
Dale Earnhardt - “The Intimidator” are enjoying the heavenly
life ‘bout now.
I do not even know where to actually begin with describing my feelings
about my brother. He IS the reason that I have continued to pursue an
education. I was in my nutrition major when Randall was diagnosed with
cancer (1995). As his illness progressed, I was forced to change my major
to exercise physiology. It is quite hard to learn chemistry while
your mind is on chemo treatments so learning the muscles of one’s
body fit the stress level of that time. I never knew how or why such a
change of events could impact my life until recently. As you have hopefully
read my testimony, you know that I have recently finished my dietetic
internship on his birthday of last year. Coincidence – I think not!
Randall was always so proud of me. He was my cheerleader and biggest fan!
I continued my education because of him. I gained strength and I continue
to gain strength from him even now! After a long 8 years and some months
of education and employment, I am now a registered dietitian, former collegiate
strength and conditioning coach, fitness specialist, national speaker
on eating disorders, and a business owner! There were days that I honestly
thought I could not finish this dream of mine. The funny thing is….
it’s only beginning!
Randall’s worst days in the hospital made any day of mine seem like
a piece of cake! I hope none of you ever have to experience what my family
has had to go through. I can truly say that God has a purpose for our
lives. Why Randall’s was cut so short….. well, I know that
one day I will find out. I do know that in my life, I have grown stronger
from his experience! I hope and pray that through the life experiences,
information, and passion that I have for my work and family, you will
grow stronger in the Lord and gain strength! [more
